NVidia at CES has just announced their next generation mobile technology, the Tegra 4. Successor to the impressive Tegra 3, NVidia claims that the new Tegra 4 is the “world’s fastest mobile processor”. The new SoC contains a five-core processor (with one of those cores underclocked for battery life purposes) and “72 GPU cores” – yes, that’s right, 72.
Though all of this sounds impressive, there’s still plenty we don’t know for sure here – what the processor will be clocked at, or what nm processess the new chips are being built on (some rumors peg it at 28nm, up from the Tegra 3′s 40nm, but that’s far from confirmed) which should help with battery life, something the Tegra 3 was notoriously subpar at.
NVidia’s remained tight lipped about its release date, though we suspect it’ll be going head to head against whatever new chip Qualcomm brings to the table late this Spring.
